Pullback, Risk Manager & Flags indicator on a live chart

What it draws

Pullback, Risk Manager & Flags: Pullback signals
Pullback markers with the Core Trend line on a 5-minute NQ chart.

Pullback signals

In an established trend (fast EMA above the slow one, or below for a downtrend), a bar that dips to the fast EMA and closes back on the trend side is marked. A cooldown keeps the signals from clustering.

Pullback, Risk Manager & Flags: Risk Manager
5-minute NQ with Risk per trade at $1,000: the stop is 174 points away ($3,480 a contract), so the label says the stop is too wide and that 2 MNQ fit.

Risk Manager

On each Core Trend flip it draws the entry, the stop at the trailing band, and targets at 1R, 2R, 3R and so on, or snapped to recent swing highs and lows. Choose how many targets and how far apart. Set Risk per trade $ and the entry label shows how many contracts keep a stop-out inside it, with the dollar risk on the stop and each target. If even one contract is too much it says so, and on NQ, ES, YM, RTY, CL or GC it shows how many micros fit.

Full feature list

  • Pullback: a mark when price dips to the fast EMA in an established trend and closes back with it
  • Pullback: optional EMA-slope check and a cooldown so signals don't cluster
  • Risk Manager: entry, stop and targets drawn on every trend flip
  • Risk Manager: targets at 1R, 2R, 3R and so on, or snapped to recent swing highs and lows
  • Risk Manager: prices rounded to the instrument's tick size
  • Risk Manager: position size for your dollar risk: enter what you're willing to lose per trade and it shows how many contracts fit the stop, plus each target in dollars
  • Flags: a steep pole, a shallow pullback box, the breakout and a measured-move target
  • Flags: a still-forming flag is marked with ‘?’ until it breaks out
  • Optional alerts on pullbacks and flag breakouts, in NinjaTrader and on your phone

How it works

Pullback: in an uptrend (fast EMA above the slow one), a bar whose low reaches the fast EMA and that closes back above it is marked. Downtrends are the mirror.

Risk Manager: when the trend flips (the same engine as Core Trend) the entry is the flip bar's close and the stop the trailing band. Targets are multiples of that distance, which is how most traders set several take-profits.

Flags: a pole of at least four average bars in a strong straight line, then a tight pullback that gives back no more than about half of it. A close beyond the box confirms the flag; the target is the pole's height added to the breakout.

Good to know

  • These are planning and context tools. Pullbacks and flags are continuation patterns, and in our tests they worked best taken with the bigger trend and at a level, not on their own.

Questions

Does the Risk Manager place orders?

No. It only draws the levels so you can see the risk and reward before you trade.

How does the position size work?

Set Risk per trade $ (for example $250). The contracts shown are that amount divided by the stop distance times the instrument's point value, rounded down, so a stop-out stays inside it. If even one contract risks more, the label says the stop is too wide, and on NQ, ES, YM, RTY, CL or GC it also shows how many micros (one tenth the size) fit.

Is there a ready-made chart setup?

Yes. Holdout installs chart templates for 1-minute to daily charts, plus Signals and Order Flow layouts. See the chart templates page.
