NinjaTrader 8 indicators from other developers come as a zip file that you import from the Control Center: Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On. Import the zip itself; don't unzip it first. The indicator then appears in a chart's Indicators window (Ctrl+I). Most import errors come from an older copy that's already installed or a file that lost its .zip extension.
Before you import
- Keep the zip as downloaded. NinjaTrader imports the archive itself, so an unzipped folder won't work.
- Check the file name ends in .zip. Some browsers and download pages save it without the extension; rename it to add .zip back.
- Make sure it's built for NinjaTrader 8. Add-ons for NinjaTrader 7 won't import.
Step by step
- In the NinjaTrader Control Center, open Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On…
- Select the zip file and click Open. NinjaTrader confirms when the import succeeds.
- Restart NinjaTrader if it asks you to.
- Open a chart and press Ctrl+I (or right-click the chart and choose Indicators…). Find the indicator in the list, double-click to add it, set its inputs and click OK.
- To reuse a setup, save the chart as a template (right-click → Templates → Save) so every new chart opens with it.
Updating to a new version
Import the new zip the same way. NinjaTrader replaces the previous version, and charts keep the indicator and its settings.
Common errors and fixes
- "Import failed… may contain duplicate method names that already exist on your PC": the same indicator, or a file it shares, is already installed, often an older copy. Remove the old version (see below) and import again.
- The file doesn't show in the Open dialog, or the import does nothing: the download lost its .zip extension or was unzipped. Rename it to end in .zip and import the zip.
- The indicator isn't in the Indicators list after importing: restart NinjaTrader, and use the search box at the top of the Indicators window.
- Errors mentioning other scripts: NinjaTrader compiles all custom scripts together, so one broken script blocks the rest. The NinjaScript Editor's error list shows which file; fix or remove it.
Removing an indicator
Compiled (protected) add-ons, which most commercial indicators are: Control Center → Tools → Remove NinjaScript Assembly, select it, then restart NinjaTrader. Open-source scripts: open the NinjaScript Editor, right-click the file in the NinjaScript Explorer and remove it.
